Judoca Maria Portela takes the lead in the world judo ranking

Ad1

Gaúcha joins Érika Miranda (52kg) and David Moura (+ 100kg), Brazilians who also lead their categories

Maria Portela

The title of judoka Maria Portela in the Grand Slam of Yekaterinburg, Russia last Sunday, made the athlete reach the top of the category for athletes up to 70 kg. It has reached a thousand points and is now the first color in the World Ranking of the International Judo Federation (IJF), updated on Monday.
Besides Maria, Brazil has two other judokas leading the rankings of their categories. Érika Miranda (52kg) and David Moura (+ 100kg) remained in first place. Only Brazilians and Japanese have three ranking leaders.
Maria celebrates the new position, but highlights the greater focus she will need to have from now on. "Leading the world rankings is a coronation by results, but it serves to keep me alert and continue in search of evolution," he says.
The Brazilian arrived in first place after winning nine fights without losing and winning two gold medals: one at the World Circuit (St. Petersburg World Masters - 2017) and another at the Grand Slam of Yekaterinburg (2018). Maria now has 5,241 points passed the current world champion, Japan's Chizuru Arai, which totals 4,650 points.
TOP 10. In the top 10 of the world ranking, Brazil has other highlights such as Mayra Aguiar (2nd), Maria Suelen Altheman (4th), Rafael Silva (4th), Rafaela Silva (7th), Jéssica Pereira (8th), Beatriz Souza 8º), Eduardo Yudy (10th) and Eric Takabatake (10th).
Last weekend, the Brazilian team achieved impressive results by winning eight medals in the Russian Grand Slam and 12 at the Lima Open in Peru. The main selection will be ahead this month the Buenos Aires Open (3/24 and 3/25) and the Tbilisi Grand Prix in Georgia, from 03/30 to 01/04.

10 Serious Side Effects Of Beetroot

Ad1 10 Serious Side Effects Of Beetroot Beets sure are healthy and wonderfully nutritious. The vegetable is a must in a any health-food show that you watch. But there is another side to it most of us don’t know – the dark side. In this post we explore the side effects of beetroot. Keep reading.

Is Beetroot Bad For You?

Well, no vegetable or fruit can be bad. We need all of them. So if you are wondering beetroots are bad in general, no, they are not. However, they might cause certain side effects if not taken as they must.
Beetroot, if taken in excess, can lead to kidney stones or gout.
Consuming beetroot juice might also have certain issues. It can lead to the accumulation of metals like iron, copper, and magnesium in the liver – causing complications. Taking the juice once a while could be okay. But not daily.

Side Effects Of Beetroot

Check out here some of the uncommon beetroot side effects in detail.

1. Might Cause Beeturia

What you take throughout the day can influence the color of your urine. Excessive consumption of beets can cause your urine to appear pink. And according to a UK study, this effect is more common in individuals deficient in iron (1). Another study conducted on eight individuals reported similar findings – all of them were given beetroot supplements, and seven of the eight participants showed signs of beeturia (2).
One particular study says though beeturia is not a harmful condition by itself, it definitely warrants the need for guidance on problems with iron metabolism (3).

2. Kidney Stones

Side Effects Of Beetroot

According to the Harvard Health Blog, beetroot is rich in oxalate that can cause kidney stones (4). If you already have stones, your doctor might advise you to quit beetroot or reduce its consumption.
You may not be in danger if you don’t have a history of kidney stones. But if you do, you might contract the condition again upon beetroot consumption (5).
There are four types of kidney stones, with calcium being the most common one. The mineral can combine with other substances, especially oxalate, and form a stone. Beetroot is high in oxalate – and can directly contribute to kidney stones (6). They achieve this by increasing urinary oxalate excretion, which leads to the development of calcium oxalate stones (7).
Beets are also known to increase urinary oxalate concentrations – which can eventually lead to kidney stones (8).

3. Rashes

Though rare, this allergy can occur in certain individuals. Allergic reactions to beetroot consumption include rashes, hives, itchiness, and even chills and fever. Certain people also complain of the constriction of vocal chords, though this is rare.
One case of the presence of blood in urine is hematuria. Though beetroot doesn’t cause this condition, the symptoms are similar to beeturia – urine being coke colored (8). Hence, if your urine is colored and you have been consuming beets, one reason could be beeturia. But what if it’s not? Which is why it is recommended you consult your doctor.

4. Colored Stools

Beetroot contains a chemical named betacyanin, which gives the vegetable its deep red color. Though most foods are chemically altered and lose their coloration as they go through the digestive system, the breakdown of betacyanin might depend on certain factors. Colored stools might be harmless, but still, it is always better to consult your physician. Your doctor can test the stool and rule out the presence of blood (9). Blood in stools might indicate something serious.
Beetroot can also cause a condition called melaena, which refers to tarry or black stools from the presence of altered blood (10).
In case you are passing colored stools quite frequently, keep beetroot away from your plate for a couple of days. If the issue persists, consult your doctor right away (11).

5. Sudden Dips In Blood Pressure Levels

This could be a benefit. But if your blood pressure levels are already low or are fluctuating, then no. Because beetroot can cause sudden dips in blood pressure levels. And that isn’t healthy as well.
One Australian study stated that beetroot juice might lower blood pressure in men when consumed as part of a normal diet (12).
Beets are rich in nitrates, and as per certain studies, can acutely lower blood pressure in healthy individuals (13).

6. Stomach Upset

Side Effects Of Beetroot

If you are already suffering from gastrointestinal issues, eating beets can only aggravate the issue. They can also cause bloating, flatulence, and cramping. The vegetable can also lead to certain changes in your bowel movements – including conditions like constipation and diarrhea.
Eating beets can also cause gas pains – pain that originates from the formation of gas in the stomach due to beetroot’s fiber content. Most of the time, passing gas or bowel movements can relieve gas pains. If not, do meet your physician.
Being allergic to beets can also be one reason to develop issues like stomach cramps.
According to a report published by the Ohio Department of Health, short-term exposure to high levels of nitrites can cause stomach upset and other abdominal conditions like diarrhea and vomiting. The symptoms develop 18 to 36 hours after high levels of nitrites have been consumed. In certain cases, they can occur as soon as within 2 hours or as long as 14 days later (14).

7. Spike In Blood Sugar

One of the concerning side effects of beetroot. This could be a serious concern for anyone who has blood sugar problems. Beets rate moderately high on the Glycemic Index, which is a downside. Which is why it is best to avoid beets if you have issues related to your blood sugar levels.
Beets might be an acceptable food on a diet designed for steady glucose levels. But yes, one must consult a doctor before consuming them.

8. Problems During Pregnancy

One compound in beetroot that causes concern for its use in pregnancy is betaine. As per studies, betaine had shown adverse effects in animal testing. And there are no adequate studies on pregnant women to support its safety.
Also, pregnant women are more sensitive to the effects of nitrite (15). Beets being high in nitrites must hence be avoided by expecting mothers. And not just the mother, even the fetus could be more sensitive to the toxicity of nitrites – especially during the 30th week of pregnancy when there is a rise in oxidative stress (16).

9. Can Cause Gout

Side Effects Of Beetroot

This type of arthritis that occurs due to excessive uric acid build-up can get extremely painful. The symptoms include extreme joint pains (particularly at the base of the toe), shiny red joints, and high fever. And according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, foods containing oxalate, like beets, can contribute to gout (17). And hence, must be avoided.

10. Might Harm The Liver

Beets are rich in iron, magnesium, copper, and phosphorous – and that’s the good part. But the bad part is all of those are metals, and excessive consumption of these can lead to their accumulation in the liver. This can harm the liver and pancreas.

How Much Of Beetroot Is Too Much?

Certain websites say a glass of beet juice a day is fine. Some say that’s too much. But there is limited data available in this aspect (18). Hence, doctor’s advice is required.

Precautions

Beets were found to cause low calcium levels. They can also aggravate kidney disease (19). Hence, individuals with related conditions must abstain from beets.
Beetroot poisoning can happen with excessive consumption of beets. The symptoms can be anything we discussed in this post. Take care of that as well.

A Word On SuperBeets

There is something else to consider. Heard of SuperBeets? It’s a powdered beetroot supplement. But is it healthier than the actual beet vegetable?
As per the claims, SuperBeets is said to increase the levels of nitric oxide, which in turn is said to offer certain benefits (like helping your blood pressure or lower blood pressure).
But we need to understand nitric oxide is what nitrites get converted into once we consume them. So if nitrites are harmful, so is nitric oxide. So if you are suffering from any of the side effects, it is better you stay away from this supplement as well.

Conclusion

Beets are healthy. One of the healthiest, rather. But if you are experiencing any of the effects, stop eating them.
We hope this post on side effects of beetroot has been of some help to you. Let us know what you think by commenting in the box below.

In this post, we discuss the various ways lemongrass tea can make your life better and some additional (and interesting) information as well.

What Is Lemongrass Tea Good For?

Several studies have proven how lemongrass tea can help relieve abdominal issues (like stomach cramps and pain), blood pressure, cough, cold, and even exhaustion.
Lemongrass essential oil is particularly used to treat muscle pain upon inhalation. The plant is also used in foods and beverages as a flavoring. There are several other ways this plant is utilized – but in this post, we stick to the health benefits, the most important of all.

What Are The Health Benefits Of Lemongrass Tea?

The tea aids weight loss, and given its ability to lower blood sugar, it can be a good supplemental treatment for diabetes. Studies have shown that the tea can fight hypertension and cancer as well. Lemongrass tea also boosts the health of your skin and hair.

1. Aids Weight Loss

1. Aids Weight Loss

Lemongrass tea contains very few calories. This makes it one good inclusion to your weight loss diet. The tea also fills you up, preventing you from overeating. Sipping it during the day can also stop you from binge eating.
The tea contains polyphenols that are found to increase energy expenditure and fat oxidation, thereby contributing to weight loss. It can also be used for detox, and this kickstarts your metabolism and aids weight loss. And since lemongrass tea is a natural diuretic, drinking enough of it can help you drop some pounds.

2. Might Help In Diabetes Treatment

Some studies show that lemongrass tea can lower blood sugar levels, and this can be beneficial to diabetics. But consult your doctor if you are already on diabetes medication. Studies have also shown that taking lemongrass tea can improve fasting blood glucose levels.
Also, since lemongrass tea works as a detox, it can purify your pancreas and improve its functionality.

3. Regulates Blood Pressure

Studies have dubbed lemongrass as a traditional remedy for hypertension (1). Another study conducted in 2012 found that intake of lemongrass tea can cause a moderate drop in blood pressure levels – results that are much better when compared to green tea intake (2).
But we suggest that individuals with heart problems use lemongrass tea with caution – for the very same reason.

4. Helps Fight Cancer

Laboratory studies have shown that lemongrass extract can inhibit the early phases of cancer, especially that of the liver. One compound in lemongrass, called citral, was found to induce cell death in the case of breast cancer.
Studies have also shown how lemongrass extracts can be a nontoxic alternative to cancer treatment (3). Some sources say that lemongrass also helps treat prostate cancer – although concrete research is lacking.

5. Improves Digestive Health

5. Improves Digestive Health

Lemongrass tea works wonderfully well as an alternative remedy for stomach cramping, upset stomach, and other digestive issues. Studies have shown that lemongrass can be effective in treating gastric ulcers (4).
Lemongrass essential oil can also help protect the stomach lining from aspirin (regular use of aspirin can often cause gastric ulcers). The oil is also used to improve digestion (5).

6. Enhances Kidney Functioning

Lemongrass tea works as a good detox, and it can help cleanse the kidneys as well. This might invariably improve their functioning.

7. Promotes Deep Sleep

Lemongrass tea has a calming effect, which can aid deep sleep. It can also help relieve insomnia and irritability – and this is especially true with lemongrass oil.

8. Treats Yeast Infections

Lemongrass oil contains citral and limonene, two important compounds that prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi. The oil possesses antibiotic-like effects, which can help treat yeast infections.
One Brazilian study talks about the antifungal activity of lemongrass and how it can help treat Candida (6).

9. Reduces Anxiety

The same calming effects of lemongrass play a role here too. In fact, one Brazilian study spoke of how the aroma of lemongrass could be used to reduce anxiety (7).

10. Can Treat Headaches

10. Can Treat Headaches
Shutterstock
In tests, lemongrass tea was found to treat headaches in ways similar to that of aspirin. The tea inhibits the clumping of human blood platelets, thereby treating headaches. This property can be attributed to eugenol, a specific extract found in lemongrass.

11. Heals Sore Throat

The antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of lemongrass tea can decongest your respiratory system, thereby relieving sore throat. The tea also has the ability to cleanse toxins from the body and stimulate lymph drainage.

12. Treats Cold, Cough, And Allergies

There is mostly only anecdotal evidence for this. The tea might enhance immunity, and this can help fight cold and cough and the related allergies.

13. Improves Skin Health

The antiseptic and astringent properties of lemongrass tea can boost skin health. The essential oil tones your skin and makes it radiant. You can drink the tea or add the essential oil to your shampoos and soaps. The tea can also sterilize your pores and strengthen your tissues. The citral in lemongrass can also help prevent skin cancer.
Lemongrass can also treat infections like folliculitis and cellulitis, which are caused by bacteria. And being antifungal, the tea can also help treat fungal infections on the skin.

14. Boosts Hair Health

Drinking lemongrass tea might strengthen your hair follicles, thereby preventing hair fall. Talking about dandruff, the essential oil can work wonders. Studies have shown how applying the oil to hair can reduce dandruff in a matter of 7 days (8).
The oil is most effective when used daily. Add a few drops of the oil to your shampoo and conditioner.
These are the benefits of lemongrass tea. But what contribute to these benefits are the nutrients present in lemongrass – which are what we will see now.

7 Amazing Benefits Of Mermaid Yoga Pose On Your Body

Ad1 Amazing-Benefits-Of-Mermaid-Yoga-Pose-On-Your-Body Mermaid Pose looks quite similar to the very potent hip opening yoga asana, Eka Pada Rajakapotasana. It is an advanced way of practicing the Pigeon Pose. If done right, the Mermaid Pose helps in easing a tight hip and even nurses you out of a bad sciatica pain. However, it is not suitable for those who have knee injury. Plus, being a powerful pose that is really challenging, it is not advisable for beginners to practice without proper supervision.
Let us take a look at how to do the mermaid pose, but please do not practice this pose unless you are comfortable doing Eka Pada Rajakapotasana and you are an advanced yoga practitioner.

How To Do Mermaid Pose:

  1. Start with Adho Mukha Svanasana, the Downward Facing Dog pose.
  2. Spread your fingers outward, lift the hips, and elongate your spine. Balance yourself on the heels.
  3. Exhaling deeply, bend the right knee in such a way that it rests between the hands spread out at shoulder width.
  4. Let the right ankle rest near the left wrist on the yoga mat in such a way that the right knee lies close to the right wrist.
  5. Stretch the left leg backward so that the left toes are touching the floor.
  6. Exerting pressure on the fingertips, elongate your entire body and pull the torso from the thigh. Let the tailbone fall closer to the left heel.
  7. Drawing down via the shin of the right leg and dividing your balance between the hips, pull the right thigh towards your midline.
  8. Pushing your legs, lengthen your spine as high as possible.
  9. Let the right hand rest on the right thigh.
  10. Bend the left knee and using your left hand clasp the left foot.
  11. Pull the left foot as close as possible to your body in such a way that the toes rest in the elbow’s crease.
  12. Keeping the spine elongated, bring the right hand above your head. Bend it at the elbow and clasp the left hand.
  13. Squaring the torso and hips forward, exert pressure on the legs to activate the core and lift the spine.
  14. Keep you gaze fixed at the sky with deep breaths.
  15. Hold the pose for 10 breaths.
  16. Then release the left leg allowing it to extend backward.
  17. Place you hands in front of the body.
  18. Tucking in the left toes, come back to Adhvo Mukha Svanasana.
  19. Repeat the same steps with other side too.
This makes one repetition. Do 5 to 7 such repetition, relaxing for about 15 seconds in between.

Modifications:

A very strong pose, this can render a grace to your body with regular practice. Here are few tips to modify the pose to meet your requirements:
  • You can use a yoga belt to hold your left foot if you find it difficult to allow the foot to rest in the elbow crease. Tie the belt firmly around the foot and hold it with the hands. This can also be used to deepen the pose.
  • You can also do a partial backbend if you feel the intensity of bending backward is a little aggressive.
  • Place a blanket beneath your hip for added support and cushioning.

Benefits Of Mermaid Pose:

The advanced version of One Legged Pigeon Pose comes with an array of health benefits. Here is what you can expect from practicing Mermaid Pose regularly:
  1. A stronger pelvic floor and core
  2. Freedom from back ache and sciatica
  3. A more flexible and stronger lower back, quad muscles, and hip flexors
  4. A better level of balance
  5. Stronger and more open shoulders and chest
  6. A better control over your sexual desires
  7. A stronger and more potent digestive system and reproductive system

A Word Of Caution:

Never practice this pose in case you are suffering from any kind of injuries to the meniscus, knee, or ligaments. Avoid practicing the pose if you have a history of hip or shoulder dislocation. Always make sure that the foot in the front is flexed enough to avoid knee injury. Keep the spine extended and lifted throughout. Do not push yourself beyond your limits. Keep practicing for perfection.
Practice and patience – these are the two key elements you need to master Mermaid Pose. As I mentioned in the beginning, it is not a good asana if you are a novice, beginner, or have some knee injury. However, you can try this if you have strong willpower.

Are you comfortable with Ek Pada Rajakapotasana? Have you ever tried Mermaid Pose? What was your experience? Share it with us in the comments section below.

There is nothing surprising about the fact that high blood pressure levels are one of the major reasons of lifestyle diseases. But with celery around the corner, one doesn’t have to worry much.
Celery has been to found to contain a phytochemical called phthalides, which relaxes artery walls and increases blood flow – thereby reducing blood pressure (2). One Iranian study had also attributed the antihypertensive properties of celery to the same phytochemical (3). The phytochemical also relaxes the smooth muscles around blood vessels (4).
Celery is also rich in nitrates, which have been found to lower blood pressure (5). According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, celery seed extracts can also lower blood pressure levels (6). In traditional Chinese medicine, celery is termed as a cool food that lowers blood pressure (7).

2. Lowers Cholesterol

One major reason celery can be a part of your low-cholesterol diet is its abundance of fiber and the less number of calories it contains (8). And the phtyochemical phthalide comes into the picture again – in one Chicago study, phthalides were found to reduce cholesterol levels by 7%. Similar findings were established in a Singapore study (9).
Celery has been found to reduce triglycerides and cholesterol levels, and at the same time increase the levels of HDL (the good cholesterol) – thereby treating hyperlipidemia as well.

3. Reduces Inflammation

Celery is replete with phytonutrient antioxidants that possess anti-inflammatory properties. The vegetable is also an important source of flavonols in Chinese adults (10). Celery juice or celery extracts also reduce the activity of certain proteins that are linked to inflammation (11).
Celery also contains a compound called luteolin that can prevent inflammation in the cells of lungs, prostate, gums, and the brain (12). Celery is also found to inhibit the growth of H. pylori, a bacteria that causes gastritis (or the inflammation of stomach lining) (13).

4. Aids Weight Loss

Celery is one of the few ideal foods you can consume for healthy weight loss. One, because it is low in calories. And two, it is high on fiber. Fiber also makes you feel full for longer after eating, which prevents you from binging – ultimately facilitating weight loss. Celery’s high water content could be another boon for people looking to lose weight – inadequate water intake causes dehydration, leaving you fatigued and demotivated to hit the gym and workout.
Celery also regulates lipid metabolism, and hence is a valuable option in weight loss diets (14). It can also be consumed with other vegetables that have a higher energy density – celery, being water-rich, lowers the energy density of the other ingredients and promotes weight loss (15).

5. Helps Prevent Cancer

Cancer has always been a deadly disease. But, its prevention lies in its nature itself, with celery possessing some of the best chemopreventive properties.
Celery contains polyacetylenes, compounds that prevent numerous cancer formations. The bioactive flavonoids celery contains (apigenin and luteolin) fight free radicals and kill any cancer cells in the body (16). The flavonoids in celery were also found to kill pancreatic cancer cells (17). Luteolin has also been found to prevent breast cancer (18).
Flavonoids in celery harbor chemopreventive properties, and therefore act as antioxidants. In one study, pre-treating cancer cells with apigenin and luteolin followed by the application of a chemotherapy drug proved to be the most effective in treating cancer (19). Numerous other studies have also attributed the ability to prevent cancer to luteolin (20).

The natural fibers in celery make it an important food for the digestive system. The soluble fiber in celery is fermented by the bacteria in the large intestine. This fermentation process produces short-chain fatty acids, one of which (butyrate) promotes gastrointestinal health.
Celery also contains insoluble fiber, which makes it easy for stool to pass.

7. Improves Sex Life

This vegetable, which tastes like crunchy water, can stir up your sex life. Each celery stalk contains androstenone and androstenol, which are basically odour molecules. These molecules travel through the back of your throat and to your nose, thereby boosting your arousal and emitting scents that can make you more desirable (21).
Celery extracts were also found to enhance sexual performance in men (22). The dosage was found to increase sperm count (23). It had even increased the secretion of testosterone.

By 2030, it is estimated that a whopping 439 million adults will suffer from diabetes. Yes, that number does put one at unease. But, you don’t have to be one among them, do you?
The antidiabetic properties of celery can be attributed to its vitamin K content. This vitamin reduces inflammation, thereby increasing insulin sensitivity and improving glucose metabolism. In one study, participants with the highest vitamin K intake had the lowest risk of Type 2 diabetes.
Additionally, diabetes can also be caused by H. pylori, the very same bacteria that can cause stomach issues. And, as already discussed, celery has the unique ability to hinder the growth of H. pylori.
In one Iranian study, celery seed extract was found to control diabetes in rats (25), indicating the possibility of a similar effect in humans.
