The title of judoka Maria Portela in the Grand Slam of Yekaterinburg, Russia last Sunday, made the athlete reach the top of the category for athletes up to 70 kg. It has reached a thousand points and is now the first color in the World Ranking of the International Judo Federation (IJF), updated on Monday.
Besides Maria, Brazil has two other judokas leading the rankings of their categories. Érika Miranda (52kg) and David Moura (+ 100kg) remained in first place. Only Brazilians and Japanese have three ranking leaders.
Maria celebrates the new position, but highlights the greater focus she will need to have from now on. "Leading the world rankings is a coronation by results, but it serves to keep me alert and continue in search of evolution," he says.
The Brazilian arrived in first place after winning nine fights without losing and winning two gold medals: one at the World Circuit (St. Petersburg World Masters - 2017) and another at the Grand Slam of Yekaterinburg (2018). Maria now has 5,241 points passed the current world champion, Japan's Chizuru Arai, which totals 4,650 points.
TOP 10. In the top 10 of the world ranking, Brazil has other highlights such as Mayra Aguiar (2nd), Maria Suelen Altheman (4th), Rafael Silva (4th), Rafaela Silva (7th), Jéssica Pereira (8th), Beatriz Souza 8º), Eduardo Yudy (10th) and Eric Takabatake (10th).
Last weekend, the Brazilian team achieved impressive results by winning eight medals in the Russian Grand Slam and 12 at the Lima Open in Peru. The main selection will be ahead this month the Buenos Aires Open (3/24 and 3/25) and the Tbilisi Grand Prix in Georgia, from 03/30 to 01/04.
