A 20 year old U.S. Postal Service worker with FOUR CHILDREN was arrested for stealing money from greeting cards, while on the job.
According to authorities, Ebony Lavonne Smith of Wisconsin pled guilty to stealing checks and cash from over 6,000 greeting cards. The 20-year-old admitted to stealing the money as part of a plea deal earlier this month.
Ebonee began working at the post office in March 2015. By the summer of 2017, residents on Ebonee's routes started complaining that they weren’t receiving greeting cards sent by loved ones.
Court documents show that Smith was caught stealing in a sting operation. The post office set her up by placing a test card containing a $20 bill on her route. The envelope for the card held a transmitter that would activate if the card was opened.
Ebonee fell for the trap and STOLE the card. Police tracked her down and took her into custody.
They searched for her car and found a satchel containing 31 USPS greeting cards, 23 other greeting cards, a Starbucks gift card, a roll of tape and letter openers.
Smith told authorities she started stealing when she began her route in Washington Highlands. She claims she used the money to pay bills and to support her four children, according to documents.
She stole a total of 6,000 Greeting Cards
