USA Gymnastics is demanding to be let out of Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman’s lawsuit — accusing them of conspiring to cover up the sexual abuse by Dr. Nassar — by arguing they were ignorant of his decades of abuse of hundreds of athletes.
Raisman sued the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and USA Gymnastics (USAG) over the repeated sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of Dr. Nassar, who was sentenced to 60 years in prison after pleading guilty to criminal sexual conduct and child pornography.
On September 6, USA Gymnastics filed court docs responding to Raisman’s lawsuit.
USAG says there is no question that Nassar inflicted physical and emotional pain on Raisman and describe her as having “tremendous strength and courage” in response to Nassar’s actions.
However, USAG argues that California law is very clear and only the perpetrator can be held liable for sexual harassment claims. They claim Raisman failed to point out any specific evidence that USAG officials had prior knowledge of Nassar’s abuse.
Aly Raisman accused USAG of failing to train and supervise staff to report and stop inappropriate sexual misconduct and for allegedly conspiring with Nassar to hide his sexual abuses.
USAG says, “Ignorance without a reason to be suspicious is not a legal basis for ratification.”
They are demanding the entire case against them be dismissed.
As The Blast first reported, the United States Olympic Committee has also denied wrongdoing and sought to dismiss Raisman’s case as well.
