Harvey Weinstein Sued by Insurance Co. That Doesn’t Want to Pay for His Criminal Case

Harvey Weinstein‘s insurance company is asking a judge to declare that they do not have to cover his defense costs for his upcoming rape trial or the $1 million bail he paid to get out of jail.

According to court documents obtained by The Blast, Steadfast Insurance Company claims they have a policy with Weinstein but they do not believe it extends to his criminal proceedings

“Steadfast seeks a declaration,” they write, “that the criminal proceeding is not within the scope of coverage afforded by and does not trigger the insuring agreements of the insurance policy issued by Steadfast under which Weinstein seeks coverage.”

Steadfast claims Weinstein has asked for his $1 million bail to be reimbursed, but they are “declining coverage for the bail paid by Weinstein and is advising Weinstein that the cash bail paid by Weinstein is not within the definition of Defense Costs or Loss under the Steadfast Policy.”

Weinstein turned himself into police on May 25 and was arrested, processed and charged with Rape, Criminal Sex Act, Sex Abuse and Sexual Misconduct for incidents involving two separate women.

As The Blast first reported, Weinstein was previously sued by five insurance companies who claim they should not have to have cover legal costs for his civil cases.

The companies claimed that their policies cover damages caused by an “accident,” “offense,” or occurrence,” but Weinstein’s actions were “ongoing and pervasive, and allegedly criminal, acts of premeditated, forcible, non- consensual sexual and physical assault, physical threats and abuse in the context of Weinstein’s invitation to his victims to discuss potential acting or producing roles in the film industry.”
