Who: Benedict Cumberbatch
Where: Patrick Melrose TV show launch event, London
While the veins on our forehead bulge to bursting point as we try and hail a cab,
Sherlock
actor Benedict Cumberbatch cooly stands in front of us and slides into a
taxi instantaneously. We assume it must be the fine blue suit he is
sporting, that sits ever so well on the shoulders, and is served
admirably by a crisp white shirt, understated blue and white tie, and
lightweight perforated brown shoes.
Who: Donald Glover
Where: Solo A Star Wars Story film premiere, Los Angeles
On
any other week, Royal Wedding fever would have pushed Prince Harry to
the top of the most talked about man in the world list. But Donald
Glover has pipped him to the mantle, with a number one single in the US
and a starring role in the blockbuster of the year. His style choices
are aiding the cause as well, with the throwback vibes working here
thanks to the fact the flaming red works sublimely with the white shoes
and the sleazy gold necklaces.
Who: Martin Freeman
Where: British Academy Television Awards, London
*Cue
David Attenborough voice* The silver fox is a rare and mystical
creature, and one of the finest in the menswear kingdom. Here we get up
close to a fine specimen of the species, a wild Martin Freeman, who is
looking positively dashing in a well-cut slimming black suit – note the
contrasting velvet collar – a psychedelic paisley tie and extremely
shiny black shoes which the well-dressed silver fox knows all too well
can only work when you are suited and booted.
Who: Ryan Reynolds
Where: Deadpool 2 film premiere, New York
On the red carpet for the latest instalment of his
Deadpool
film franchise, Ryan Reynolds has evacuated the red lycra motorbike
suit to adorn himself head to toe in Brunello Cuccinelli. The super-luxe
brand that handmakes all of its clothes in Italy has really pulled out
the stops here. The suit fit is sublime, but it’s the addition of the
cardigan that we are particularly enjoying. Wear it as you would a
waistcoat though – tight, and buttoned up.
Who: Derek Hough
Where: Entertainment Weekly and People Upfronts Party, New York
Waltzing
onto the list this week, dancer Derek Hough is rocking the nautical
look here. Knitted polos are a welcome change up and retro return from
your basic Lacoste version (which we still have a lot of time for). We
love the loose pinstripe trousers, too, but maybe feel like a plain navy
blue pair in the same fit would have worked better. The loafers look
cushy but are probably too flat footed to go with a suit, so Hough has
the right idea putting them in a smart, but very relaxed look.
Who: Luka Sabbat
Where: Disney ABC Upfront Presentation, New York
The
former-coolest teenager on the planet, Luka Sabbat – whose prom suit
was designed by Tom Ford – turned 20 at the end of last year and as such
lost his title. But style doesn’t disappear overnight and Sabbat’s is
as distinctive as ever with snakeskin boots and a fresco-like print
shirt showcasing maximalism to the max. Meanwhile, the black blazer and
straight leg jeans, quite correctly, go the other way.
Who: Liam Payne
Where: Good Morning America Summer Concert Series, New York
The
One Direction hiatus rolls on for another year, but the five lads are
still as visible as ever with their separate solo projects and outfits
as fly as this one showcased by Liam Payne. Brown and black don’t
usually get on but your best bet is to do as Payne has and go for a
lighter brown to fully contrast. There’s also a good crop on the
trousers to show off that classic (and colour-coordinated) pair of Nike
Air Max.
Who: Aidan Turner
Where: Red Opening Night, London
Probably more famous among British housewives for having his top off,
Poldark
star Aidan Turner is making sure he’s covered up here with a hefty
shearling denim jacket. It’s a strong play by itself so a grey top and
black skinnies are all you need to complete the look, but do try and
make sure your belt isn’t flying around waywardly around the crotch.
Who: Zachary Quinto
Where: Today TV show, New York
Vertical stripes, Cuban collar, pleated trousers – has
Star Trek
actor Zachary Quinto swallowed and digested the complete SS18 lookbook?
Electric blue is also trending and blended in with the stripes on the
shirt it looks even better. And for all that is hip going on up top,
you’ve just got to for a classic black dress shoe down below lest you
get accused of being too much of a try hard.
Who: Jordan Barrett
Where: De Grisogono Party, 71st Cannes Film Festival, France
The
pinstripe suit has officially been hijacked from the world of banking
by the fashion boys, and they are making it look mighty fine. Here is
Australian model Jordan Barrett changing the style up by dressing down
in a lightweight black tee. Going for a high crop on the trouser hem and
wearing no socks is another way to make it more casual, and we’re
loving the matching details of the gold shoe buckle sparkling in tandem
with Barrett’s cross necklace.
